dc.description.abstractBeing a literary researcher, translator, writer, and professor of English literature, Orhan Burian is an intellectual who has endeavored to give a humanist direction to Turkish thought and literature. According to him, humanism is the nullification of all dogmatic thoughts that hinder human contemplation and the liberation of the human mind. Since the mind that is set free will be in a state of permanent doubt, the life and art that this mind will build will not be about indisputable ideas and issues that are believed to have been resolved; but a product and a mirror of the dynamism peculiar to human nature. Orhan Burian perceives humanism as adapting the dynamic mind and rich philosophy of Ancient Greece to 20th century thought. Apart from the subject of humanism, he wrote many studies and criticisms about Turkish and Western literature in some literary journals of the period. This article analyses Orhan Burian’s articles in Yücel and Ufuklar journals and tries to present his position in the history of Turkish thought. In the conclusion part of the article, a general evaluation was made about Burian’s universe of ideas and writing. This general evaluation belongs to the author of the article.
dc.description.abstractEdebiyat araştırmacısı, çevirmen, yazar ve İngiliz edebiyatı profesörü Orhan Burian, Türk düşüncesine ve edebiyatına hümanist bir istikamet vermek gayretinde olmuş bir aydındır. Ona göre hümanizm insan tefekkürüne set çeken bütün dogmatik düşüncelerin hükümsüzleştirilmesi ve insan aklının serbest bırakılmasıdır. Serbest bırakılan akıl daimi bir şüphe vaziyetinde olacağına göre bu aklın inşa edeceği hayat ve sanat da tartışılmaz fikirlerin ve çözüldüğüne inanılan meselelerin değil; insan doğasına mahsus dinamizmin bir ürün, bir aynası olacaktır. Orhan Burian hümanizmi Eski Yunan’ın sahip olduğu dinamik kafanın ve zengin felsefenin XX. yüzyıl düşüncesine adapte edilmesi olarak algılamaktadır. Hümanizm konusundan ayrı olarak Burian devrin birtakım edebiyat dergilerinde Türk ve Batı edebiyatları hakkında birçok etüt ve eleştiri kaleme almıştır. Bu makale Orhan Burian’ın Yücel ve Ufuklar dergilerinde yazdığı yazıları incelemekte ve onun Türk düşünce tarihindeki konumunu takdim etmeye çalışmaktadır. Makalenin sonuç kısmında Burian’ın fikir ve yazı evreni hakkında genel bir değerlendirme yapılmıştır. Bu genel değerlendirme makalenin yazarına aittir.
