Öğe A MODEL FOR URBAN FOREST MANAGEMENT PLANNING: ISTANBUL CASE STUDY(Gh Asachi Technical Univ Iasi, 2021) Kose, Murat; Kirca, Simay; Gurbey, Alev Perihan; Saglam, Serhun; Cinar, Hande Sanem; Ozdemir, Emrah; Gumus, CanturkUrban forests have become important elements of cities' green fabric providing many ecosystem services including recreation. In this study, we proposed a model for urban forest management planning in the example of Istanbul, where urban sprawl has transformed the green infrastructure of the city dramatically. To this purpose, a total of 201 surveys were conducted through face-to-face interviews including those working as managers and technical staff in the forestry organization in Istanbul, academicians and NGOs. Subjects to be surveyed were determined according to the layered-simple random sampling method. The data were evaluated by descriptive statistics based on a variety of opinions about urban forest management planning in Turkey along with various socio-economic variables (gender, profession and experience). Whether there was any statistically significant difference between the groups was determined by Kruskal-Wallis H-Test. In case a difference was found, Duncan's Multiple Range Test was applied to detect the group(s) significantly different from each other. The results revealed that mainly males agreed on the purpose of urban forests as addressing recreational and social needs. All groups highlighted the lack of coordination and poor management system as main problems, while experienced and male subjects addressed that a new urban forest law is necessary. Mainly academicians and representatives of NGO's and related institutions suggested redefining the concept and restructuring the legislation concerning urban forests. In terms of activities, the majority favored hiking and sightseeing activities (51%), photograplty (42%), and extreme sports (27%). There was an emphasis on the need for sufficient number of hiking, climbing and cycling trails and botanical gardens. As a result, a model plan based on sustainable resource management ensuring multi-purpose utilization was proposed.Öğe Expectations of the People Living in Metropolises from Recreation Areas: Case Study—Istanbul(2023) Kose, Murat; Gurbey, Alev Perihan; Makineci, Ender; Aktas, Nilufer Kart; Akburak, Serdar; Özdemir, Emrah; Kul, Ali AyhanThe adverse effects of metropolis life have caused physical, mental, and spiritual wear on people. Recreational activities have become necessary to eliminate these wears or reduce their impact, mainly in natural areas. This study aimed to reveal the demands and expectations of people in Istanbul, a population of 15 million and one of the few metropolises globally from recreation areas. Within this study, 404 subjects were interviewed, and a survey study was carried out according to the random sampling method. The data were evaluated with various statistical techniques. Nature-based sports, botanical gar- dens, multi-purpose sports areas, and nature education activities have been determined to be the most desired functions in recreation areas in Istanbul. In terms of nature-based sports activities, it can be said that walking, cycling, and camping activities are the most preferred activities. The natural environment is the most crucial resource in meeting recreational needs. Also, unique personal features, characteristics of recreational areas, social value judgments, the population density of cities, and the amount of green space per person, etc., significantly affect recreational demands and expectations. Both were increasing the quality of existing recreation areas. The ability to carry out recreational activities that cannot be done due to the lack of space by improving the quality of current recreation areas and opening and evaluating potential recre- ation areas will ensure that the city people's recreational expectations and demands are met.Öğe Multidimensional analysis of the factors affecting the organizational and managerial structure of state forest management: Turkiye example(Consejo Superior Investigaciones Cientificas-Csic, 2023) Kose, Murat; Dasdemir, IsmetAim of study: To reveal the most important factors affecting the administrative and organizational structure in Turkiye's forestry and their effects with a multidimensional approach.Area of study: Nine provinces of Turkiye (Istanbul, Izmir, Antalya, Adana, Bolu, Trabzon, Erzurum, Sanliurfa, and Ankara), which represent nine geographic regions, where forestry activities are intensive.Materials and methods: Through the consideration of the literature review and expert opinions, 29 variables affecting the organizational and managerial structure were developed. These variables were grouped under six main headings, and questionnaire forms were prepared accordingly. They were applied to 463 technical and managerial staff in the forestry organizations with the face-to-face interview method. To evaluate the data, descriptive statistics, factor analysis, multiple regression analysis, and the Kruskal-Wallis H Test were used.Main results: The most important factors affecting the organizational and managerial structure were found to be (i) working conditions and job satisfaction, (ii) educational level of employees, (iii) technical and managerial competence, and (iv) solidarity and institutional support. Approximately 67% of the managerial and organizational structure of Tur-kiye's forestry was explained by these four factors. The differences in the views of the interviewees in terms of working conditions and job satisfaction, educational level, technical and managerial competence, and solidarity and institutional support factors were determined according to some task variables.Research highlights: Enabling employees in managerial positions to have postgraduate education and to apply their knowledge and experience is effective in increasing job satisfaction, managerial competence, participation in managerial decisions, and thus sustainable forestry.Öğe Ormancılık faaliyetlerinin kırsal halkın ekonomik ve sosyal yaşamındaki yeri ve önemi: Kütahya orman köylerinde bir araştırma(2025) Kose, Murat; Bekircan, Balcı; Tosun, İsmailGiriş ve Hedefler Dağlık alanlarda, engebeli arazilerde ve merkezden uzak konumda bulunan orman köylerinde, köylülerin geçiminde ormancılık faaliyetleri önemli bir yer tutmaktadır. Odun hammaddesi üretiminin yanında, alternatif gelir kaynakları ve orman ürünleri işleme atölyeleri oluşturulabilir, tarımsal ormancılık üzerine çalışmalar başlatılabilir.Öğe R'WOT-based strategic planning and management for urban forests: Lessons from Istanbul's Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Forest(Elsevier Gmbh, 2025) Kose, Murat; Flores, Simay KircaThe rapid population growth, accelerating urbanization, and ongoing climate crisis have intensified the need for optimizing urban forest functions. Istanbul, with its high demand for recreational areas, hosts the largest number of urban forests in Turkey, presenting complex challenges. This study focuses on the Kanuni Sultan S & uuml;leyman Forest, established in 2012 as Turkey's largest urban forest. We employ the R ' WOT methodology to assess the current state of this forest, contribute to the development of existing and future urban forests, and formulate strategies for conflict resolution in planning and management processes. The research seeks to balance urban residents' recreational needs with ecological sustainability. A participatory approach was adopted, involving academicians, NGOs, and representatives from relevant forestry institutions. The R ' WOT technique, which incorporates Ranking and Linear Combination Techniques into traditional SWOT analysis, was used to quantify SWOT groups and their internal factors. Based on 201 samples, results indicate that all stakeholder groups identified Weaknesses as the highest priority SWOT group, assigning greater weights to factors within this category. This finding underscores the prominence of weaknesses in urban forest planning and management in Turkey. This comprehensive analysis provides measurable insights into enhancing the efficacy of urban forest management while addressing the multifaceted demands of an expanding metropolitan area in the context of environmental challenges. The quantitative approach of R ' WOT offers a solid foundation for strategic improvements in urban forestry practices, contributing to more effective urban forest management strategies in Turkey and similar contexts globally.
