Prevalence and Impact of Workplace Violence against Women in Turkey: A Cross-sectional Survey Study

Abstract

One of the areas where violence against women is experienced in all areas of social life is working life. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence, frequency and perpetrators of workplace violence against women. In addition, it is aimed to examine the effects of exposure to workplace violence on job stress and job satisfaction of female employees. The sample of the research consists of 194 female employees working in different sectors. The results of the research show that 45.4% of the participants have been exposed to workplace violence in the last 1 year. The most common types of violence are emotional pressure and bullying (35.1%) and verbal violence (34.5%). In addition, 3.1% of the female participants were exposed to physical assault and 1.5% to sexual harassment. Among the perpetrators of violence, men come first. In addition, according to the results of the research, exposure to violence in the workplace causes female employees to experience more work stress and decrease their job satisfaction. It is thought that the results of the study will contribute to the literature on this subject and will guide policies to prevent violence against women.Toplumsal yaşamın her alanında karşımıza çıkan kadına yönelik şiddet olgusunun yaşandığı alanlardan biri de çalışma hayatıdır. Bu çalışmanın amacı kadına yönelik işyeri şiddetinin yaygınlığını, sıklığını ve faillerini tespit etmektir. Ayrıca çalışmada işyerinde şiddete maruz kalmanın kadın çalışanların iş stresi ve iş tatmini üzerine etkilerinin incelenmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Araştırmanın örneklemini farklı sektörlerde çalışan 194 kadın çalışan oluşturmaktadır. Araştırma sonuçları katılımcıların %45,4’ünün son 1 yıl içinde işyerinde şiddete maruz kaldıklarını göstermektedir. En sık maruz kalınan şiddet türlerinin ise duygusal baskı ve yıldırma (%35,1) ile sözel şiddet (%34,5) olduğu görülmektedir. Ayrıca kadın katılımcıların %3,1’inin ile fiziksel saldırı ve %1,5’inin ise cinsel tacize maruz kaldıkları görülmektedir. Şiddeti uygulayanlar içerisinde ise ilk sırada erkekler gelmektedir. Ayrıca araştırma sonuçlarına göre işyerinde şiddete maruz kalmak kadın çalışanların daha fazla iş stresi yaşamalarına ve iş tatminlerinin düşmesine yol açmaktadır. Çalışma sonuçlarının bu konudaki literatüre katkı sağlayacağı ve kadına yönelik şiddeti önlemeye yönelik politikalara rehberlik edeceği düşünülmektedir.
