The Enez Hagia Sophia Mosque (Fatih Camii), originally built as a Byzantine Basilica in the twelfth century (Ousterhout, 1985) and converted into a mosque after the Ottoman conquest of 1456, represents a palimpsest of the religious and architectural traditions in Thrace. on the acropolis of ancient Ainos, the monument reflects both the Constantinopolitan influence and the cultural continuity of a site in use for centuries. The monument was severely damaged by earthquakes in 1962 and 1965 (Eyice, 1969) and subsequently abandoned for over five decades, during which its masonry and decorative features deteriorated. In 2014, structural and geotechnical investigations confirmed the critical weakness of the lime mortar joints and the heterogeneity of the stone fabric, providing the basis for a comprehensive conservation programme. This study examines the restoration and reconstruction works carried out between 2016 and 2021 under the supervision of the General Directorate of Foundations and Studio Berlucchi. The methodology integrated advanced technologies such as laser scanning, photogrammetry, BIM modelling, and seismic reinforcement systems with traditional materials and techniques, including stone replacement, lime-based injections, and repointing. With a history spanning over 800 years, the monument embodies successive phases and visible transformations, serving as a universally legible historical document for all.
