Do integrative self-knowledge and empathy predict perceived stress?: A Comparative Study with Psychology and Engineering Students

This research was conducted to examine whether there are any differences in the integrative self-knowledge, empathy and perceived stress levels of senior students of psychology and engineering departments of universities. The sample of the study consisted of senior students from psychology and some engineering departments of universities affiliated with Turkish Counsil of Higher Education. Data were collected from 361 university students studying in the final year of psychology and engineering departments. 207 (57.3%) of the participants are in the psychology department and 154 (42.7%) are in the engineering department. According to the findings, significant differences were found between departments regarding empathy, integrative self-knowledge and perceived stress levels. Additionally, perceived stress level was predicted positively by being an engineering student and negatively predicted by cognitive empathy. The results of the research were discussed in the light of the literature and some suggestions were made.
