Eco-cultural perspectives on plant diversity and NDVI in mountain pastures: a comparative study of Finail Valley (Italy) and Vercenik Valley (Turkey)
(Frontiers Media Sa, 2025) Basar, Oguz Kemal; Ugurlu, Emin; Wellstein, Camilla
Transhumance is one of the oldest traditional agricultural practices in Val Senales (Italy) and the Western Pontic Mountains (Turkey), playing a crucial role in shaping alpine ecosystems. This study examines the impact of traditional pastoral management on the distribution of dominant plant species and phytomass levels in summer grazing areas. Grazing routes were analyzed using NDVI values derived from drone-based orthophotos captured at an altitude of 35 m during the peak of the transhumance season in June, allowing for the quantification of vegetation cover and dominant species composition. Ethnographic fieldwork with local shepherds in Finailhof and the Vercenik Valley provided insights into traditional ecological knowledge related to pasture management and seasonal flock movements. Additionally, herbarium methods were employed to identify grazed plant species along the grazing routes. Although both regions share similar alpine climatic conditions, their distinct socio-cultural contexts and land-use histories result in different patterns of grazing impact and phytomass distribution. This bi-disciplinary research examines the relationship between NDVI values, phytomass variation, and dominant plant species in both study sites. The findings highlight the significance of integrating traditional ecological knowledge with remote sensing and ecological field methods to support sustainable pasture management and inform alpine policy frameworks. By combining ecological and ethnographic perspectives, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of the interdependent dynamics between cultural practices and environmental processes in pasture management of high-mountain landscapes.

Some Medicinal Aromatic Plants Sold by Kastamonu Herbalists and Usage Areas
(Igdir University, 2020) Kavaklı, Seydi Ahmet; Yaylacı, Şahin Gürkan; Ugurlu, Emin
In this study, a total of seven herbalist, one female, between 31-58 years old, who were selling in Kastamonu city center, Tosya and Taşköprü districts, were interviewed. The information about the local names, usege areas, parts of use, and types of herbal drugs sold were taken from the herbalists. The collected data are presented in a chart by comparing it with the literature. According to the result, sixty-six taxa belonging to thirty-three families, which are sold in herbalists, were determined. The family with the most taxa is Rosaceae family with eight taxa (22%), followed by Lamiaceae with six taxa (17%), Apiaceae, Asteraceae and Fabaceae families with five taxa (14%) respectively. According to the information obtained from the herbalists, twenty-four taxa (31%) and the most used drog part are the leaves. This is followed by fruit with twenty taxa (%26), flower with twelve taxa (15%), root with seven taxa (9%), seed, bark and stem with four taxa (5%), leafy and flowering branches with two taxa (3%) and rosin with one taxon (1%) respectively. Infusion method with thirty-nine taxa (50%) is at the top of the usage of taxa, sixteen taxa (21%) raw consumption, twelve taxa (15%) decoction (decoction), nine taxa (12%) powder and one taxa (1%) are followed by melting and burning methods respectively.

The Effect of Covid-19 on medicinal and aromatic plants use: The case of Turkey
(Univ Complutense Madrid, Servicio Publicaciones, 2023) Kavak, Seydi Ahmet; Erguel, Baris; Ugurlu, Emin
Covid-19, one of the coronaviruses, emerged in Wuhan, China, due to zoonotic infection towards the end of December 2019. According to WHO data, Covid-19 has been present among 267.865.289 people in 222 countries, causing death for 5.285.888 (December 12, 2021). Furthermore, these figures are increasing every day. In Turkey, 8.984.407 people have been infected thus far, and 78.602 have died (December 12, 2021). The following questions were investigated in this study: Does Covid-19 affect the use of medicinal and aromatic plants? If it does, what are the changes? What types of herbs are used and in which ways are they used? Who advises people to use these herbs? According to the results, 113 taxa belonging to 61 families and 105 genera were used by the participants at the genus, species and subspecies levels. Herbs that were widely used are Thymus spp., Tilia spp., Salvia spp., Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Mentha spp., Curcuma longa L., Rosa canina L., Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze, Lavandula spp., Matricaria spp., respectively. There was a positive and moderate-level relationship between medicinal and aromatic plants before and after COVID-19 and another positive and moderate-level relationship between the frequencies of using medicinal and aromatic plants before and after the pandemic. The relationships were significant for both questionnaire items. Moreover, there was a significant difference between the frequency of use of medicinal and aromatic plants before and after Covid-19.
