Influence of proximities and their interaction effects on scientific collaborations: the case of Turkish regions
    (Springer, 2024) Tuncer, A.; Gezici, F.
Proximity dynamics behind co-production of scientific knowledge have been explored for a decade while their combined effects form a recent interest area. The study seeks to discover these effects in the unexplored case of Turkish NUTS 3 regions. Cognitive, relational and institutional proximities and their interaction effects are evaluated towards this goal with a rapid expansion from 2006 onwards representing the institutional dynamics. The intensity of coauthorships is evaluated in six aggregate fields of FORD classification of OECD and measured based on travel time distance, publication sizes, similarity in knowledge bases, tie similarities of provinces and new universities' academic presence born from a rapid expansion process after 2006. The results display positive role of geographical, cognitive, relational proximities. In interaction, provinces proximate in one of the latter two see an increase in coauthorships when they are also geographically close in most fields. However, cognitive and relational proximity together reduce coauthorship chances. On the other hand, new universities' academic presence does not increase coauthorship chances, however, it does so when they are located in spatially closer regions in the extent of two fields.

Scientific collaborations within urban areas: the case of İstanbul
(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2024) Tuncer, A.; Gezici, Ferhan
Scientific research has increasingly been becoming a group effort, which has been the main driving force in the growth of scientific productivity. While there have been multiple contributions toward intercity and interregional interactions in the analysis of these collaborations, intracity studies have been lagging. This study addresses this gap with the example of Istanbul, Turkey. Turkey has implemented a radical expansion policy in the spatial organization of universities after 2006 during which Istanbul has further strengthened its role as a science hub for the country. However, despite the increase in the number of universities and their personnel, the role of their collaborations in knowledge production has not been studied. In this setting, the study uses a gravity model for the measurement of Istanbul’s intracity collaborations in six research fields. The study measures intracity coauthorship chances by spatial proximity, domestic coauthorships, international coauthorships, institutional distance based on public-private university coauthorships and the difference between founding years. The results show that spatial proximity within the city is mostly relevant for soft science fields such as humanities and social sciences. In comparison, intracity coauthorships in hard science fields grow with domestic coauthorships beyond Istanbul. Additionally, coauthorships between public and private universities did not have a positive association with higher coauthorship chances while differences in founding years did not prevent the growth of coauthorships despite organisational differences between new and old universities. © Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2023.

    The role of universities
(Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd., 2025) Tuncer, A.; Gezi?ci?, Ferhan
This is a definition of the role of universities in the Thematic Encyclopedia of Regional Science. This thematic Encyclopedia explores the multifaceted world of regional science, presenting a systematic and coherent overview of its central topics. It highlights the interdisciplinary nature of the field, examining the wide range of concepts, theories, methods and models that shape spatial-oriented approaches to the social sciences. Contributions from expert scholars delve into key aspects of regional science, from urban poverty and natural resource management to smart cities and AI. Highly accessible entries cover the definition, history, theoretical background, and applications of each topic, as well as avenues for future research. © Peter Nijkamp, Karima Kourtit, Kingsley E.
