Evaluating Place Attachment in the Context of Urban Morphological Changes: The Case of Hendek District
(Sage Publications Inc, 2025) Uzunca, Nursah; Demir, Ismail Hakki; Tapki, Sinem
This study examines how morphological changes in and around Hendek, Turkey's medieval urban core affect place attachment. Archival maps, pictures, and aerial photography were evaluated to trace the city's urban fabric and the role of commonly used public spaces in defining metropolitan identity. A standardized questionnaire and onsite observations were used in the mixed-methods study of 136 participants. IBM SPSS 25 evaluated quantitative data, while IBM SPSS AMOS used Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with PATH analysis to explore key variable correlations. The findings show a considerable negative correlation between morphological change perceptions and place attachment, particularly in Hendek Square. Long-term residents had stronger emotional links to central public areas, while age, life stage, and use frequency affected attachment and change perceptions. Results indicate that urban morphological change may diminish collective memory and emotional relationships with the built environment. Thus, place attachment must be integrated into urban planning and regeneration strategies to create socially cohesive, inclusive, and resilient communities because people are more likely to protect and improve places they care about.

Experiences on Covid-19 p andemic in urban design course education
(Nilay Ozsavas Ulucay, 2023) Tapki, Sinem
Today, it is observed that the current architectural planning of public spaces, squares, streets, parks and buildings can disappear and change over time, as the Covid-19 pandemic is easily effective on people and settlements on a global and regional scale. The aim of the study, which takes these changes into consideration, is to open the solution suggestions to the discussion in the process of simultaneously exploring the grounded problems while sharing the experiences of the pandemic process within the education of urban design course students. A study was carried out that was interpreted with participant interaction. Current pandemic experiences were utilized within the process of stratifying the structured opinions. The constructivist grounded theory of qualitative research pattern forms the skeleton of this solution-seeking study. Considering the interview answers made with the students, it has been observed that they gave many answers, as well as suggestions for solutions, that the pandemic will experience changes, especially in urban and public spaces and residences. It is noteworthy that the city and the surrounding areas in which they live are uniform places that do not respond to the requests of the users during the pandemic process and that the students realize the inadequacies of these uniform spaces.

Review of Sustainability of Social Memory on the Basis of Spaces in Atatürk’s Visits in Mersin
(International Information and Engineering Technology Association, 2023) Tapki, Sinem
Social memory is a phenomenon that connects the past of the society with the present, is concrete in spaces and structures, and is kneaded with culture. Because of the social memory's need for space, social memory; cannot be separated from society, space and culture. With this study, it is aimed to analyze the structures in Mersin, which Atatürk visited throughout her life, and which are in the memory of the city users. In the first part of the study; definitions and source research, which constitute the conceptual framework of the study, are included. Later, Atatürk's visits to Mersin were researched and the places that Atatürk used in these visits were determined in the written publications and in the books in which the oral interviews were published. The general characteristics, historical development and architectural features of these places-structures in the social memory have been examined. In these examinations, the current situation of the structures was determined and the interviews with the individuals focused on the effects of memory and reminiscence. Structures with characteristics of being a historical structure bear the traces of culture, social structure, life experiences, and life styles of previous periods. Ensuring the sustainability of these structures with characteristics of being a historical document by protecting them keeps the social memory alive. Thus, the sustainability of the social memory will be provided through spaces. At the same time, by documenting the architectural identity of the examined Krizmon Mansion, Silifke Tekir Farm, Silifke Atatürk House, Government House, Train Station, it is aimed to create a resource for the study to transfer it to the future. © 2023 WITPress.
