Effect of polypropylene fiber and shrinkage reducing admixture utilization on water absorption of Khorasan mortar
(Elsevier, 2022) Kaya, Tugce Isafca; Karakuzu, Kemal; Ozen, Sueleyman; Dogangun, Adem; Aghabaglou, Ali Mardani
It is seen that lime-based mortars are frequently preferred in historical and monumental structures. It is known that damages occur depending on the materials used in the building over time. In restoration works, mortars compatible with the original material of the building should be used. For this reason, the use of lime-based mortars is common during restoration work. Accordingly, attention should be paid to the physical and mechanical properties of the mortar to be produced. This study aims to determine the effect of polypropylene (PP) fiber and shrinkage reducing admixture (SRA) on the water absorption properties, which is used to improve the strength and durability properties of Khorasan mortar. As a result, it was determined that PP fiber utilization increased the water absorption ratio due to the formation of voids in the mortars. However, the use of SRA decreased the water absorption ratio due to its effect on the drying shrinkage behavior of the mortars. In cases where both are used together, the effect of fiber use was more dominant. Copyright (C) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. Reconnaissance report on damage caused by the February 6, 2023, Kahramanmaras, Earthquakes in reinforced-concrete structures
(Elsevier, 2024) Sezgin, Sedef Kocakaplan; Sakcali, Gokhan Baris; Ozen, Sueleyman; Yildirim, Eray; Avci, Eyuebhan; Bayhan, Beyhan; Caglar, Naci
Two destructive earthquakes occurred in Kahramanmaras, on February 6th, 2023, with magnitudes of Mw = 7.7 and Mw = 7.6, respectively, causing loss of lives and economic loses. A field investigation was carried out in the affected area between February 12th and 26th, 2023, and the findings are detailed in this paper focusing on the damages and causes of failures in reinforced concrete (RC) structures, both in terms of structural and non-structural elements. The seismic history, characteristics of earthquakes, and an assessment of strong ground motion results are also summarized. Recommendations are provided to mitigate future earthquake-induced damages and save lives.

Single and Multi Effects of Polycarboxylate Main and Side Chain Lengths on Setting Time, Viscosity, and Yield Stress of Cementitious Mixtures Containing Fly Ash
(Asce-Amer Soc Civil Engineers, 2023) Altun, Muhammet Gokhan; Ozen, Sueleyman; Karakuzu, Kemal; Mardani, Ali; Ramyar, Kambiz
In this study, polycarboxylate polymers having different main chain lengths, side chain lengths, and main chain and side-chain lengths at constant molecular weight were synthesized. Cementitious mixtures with 0%, 15%, 30%, and 45% fly ash substitution levels were tested with polycarboxylate based admixtures (PCEs). As the main and side chain length of the PCE increased up to a certain value, regardless of the fly ash content, the fluidity of the mixtures was positively affected. However, after a certain length, both the electrostatic and steric effects of the PCE decreased, as the polymers intercalated and flocculated, adversely affecting the flow properties of the mixtures. Regardless of the PCE structure, the use of fly ash adversely affected the setting times and rheological properties of the mixtures.
