Polyvinyl Alcohol / Starch Active Composite Films Containing Rosemary Extract and Kaolin : Structural, Mechanical and Antioxidant Activity Properties

The biodegradable packaging industry is constantly growing due to the need to prevent waste disposal problems caused by petroleum-based plastics. In recent years, efforts to improve biodegradable and active packaging have been increasing. In this study, the effects of polyphenols rich rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) extract and kaolin on the properties of polyvinyl alcohol / corn starch based films were investigated. Structural properties of films were determined by FT-IR analysis, mechanical properties tensile test, morphological properties by optical microscope. Swelling behavior of films was examined. In addition, antioxidant activity was determined with ABTS and DPPH radical removal activity. The addition of extract and clay improved the mechanical properties of the film while increasing the water absorption. The films exhibited antioxidant activity with the addition of extract. The results showed that these films could be considered as potential candidates in active packaging applications.
