A framework for advanced technology medicines from the perspective of community pharmacists
(Faculdade de Ciencias Farmaceuticas (Biblioteca), 2022) Memişoğlu, Merve; Bilen, Ömer
Nowadays, the number of medicines manufactured using advanced technologies such as biotechnology, nanotechnology, and 3D printing is increasing along with the accelerated pace of technological change. Evaluating high technology medicines from the perspective of community pharmacists is important for the quality of the pharmacy practice. The aim is to analyze the knowledge, attitude, and behavior of community pharmacists regarding advanced technology medicines and to examine the social and ethical aspects from the pharmacist’s perspective. A face-to-face cross-sectional survey was conducted with each of the 879 community pharmacists in Istanbul using a stratified sampling method. In this context, the gaps in pharmacists’ knowledge of high technology medicines were determined. It has been found that the pharmacists’ level of knowledge and willingness to learn new technologies differs according to the current education levels of the pharmacists and diversity in patient profiles. The pharmacists should close the knowledge gaps and update their information about medicines that are manufactured via the implementation of advanced technologies. The more pharmacists adapt to technology, the better guidance they can offer to society. This will also ensure that communication between the pharmacist and the patient to be built on trust, and significantly improve pharmacy practice. © 2022, Faculdade de Ciencias Farmaceuticas (Biblioteca). (2023) Düzgün, Çağla; Dede, Süreyya; Karakuş, Emine Karakuş; Adas, Mine; Bilen, Ömer
Objectives: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the intesti- nal and urinary microbiota diversity of obese, pre-diabetic, diabetic, and healthy subjects together with their food con- sumption frequency and investigate the effect on glucose metabolism. Methods: DNA was isolated from stool and urinary sam- ples of fifteen obese, fifteen prediabetics, fifteen type 2 diabetic, and fifteen lean participants by using the quantita- tive real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) method. The amounts of Bifidobacterium, Bacteroides, and Firmicutes were measured and food consumption frequency was answered by all participants through a questionnaire. Results: The levels of Bifidobacterium in fecal microbiota were significantly higher in type 2 diabetic patients compared with lean (p=0.034), prediabetic (p=0.009), and obese par- ticipants (p=0.012). However, the levels of Bifidobacterium in urinary microbiota were decreased in obese, prediabetic, and type 2 diabetic subjects as controls (p=0.048; p=0.038; p=0.015 respectively). Additionally, Bacteroides/Firmicutes ratio decreased in type two diabetic patients compared with lean subjects and had a negative correlation with BMI in prediabetic subjects. Food consumption frequency illustrates that lean subjects have unhealthy eating habits. Conclusions: Urinary microbiota could be considered in the future context of a potential biomarker in the progress of type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Dabiq Dergisi Yayın Stratejisi ile IŞİD'in Batı Dünyasındaki Terör Eylemleri Arasındaki Etkileşim

Determinants of pre-radicalization: Religious or Rebel-without-a-cause hypothesis? An empirical test among French adolescents
(IOS Press, 2021) Roché S.; Bilen, Ömer; Astor S.
The study of the profiles of young adults involved in attacks and bombings in 2015 and 2016 in France highlighted a violent rejection of Western lifestyle and national identification. The question arises whether conflicting religious beliefs (religion hypothesis) and delinquent subculture (rebel-without-acause hypothesis) characterize a handful of violent attackers only or, rather, reflect social divides in the general youth population. We propose, based on literature, that there are known two features of a pre-radicalization stage: rejection of national community and justification of political violence. We intend to focus on what explains them in France. For that purpose, we use a large representative sample (n = 9.700) of adolescents, and structural equation modeling. Overall, our findings suggest that pre-radicalization reflects larger societal cleavages. Weak identification with the national community in France appears mainly driven by religious identity, and not religious fundamentalism. Justification of violence against outgroups/agents enforcing order is not predicted by religion, neither as belief system nor as identity. The sources of legitimation of violence are mainly found in espousing a delinquent subculture, and repeat exposure to state violence in the form of pretextual police stops.

Emotion recognition in Virtual Reality using sensor fusion with eye tracking
(Elsevier Ltd, 2025) Korkmaz, Meral; Sarikaya, Mehmet Ali; Karakas, Tulay; Yildiz Ozkan, Dilek; Demir, Yüksel; Bilen, Ömer; Ince, Gökhan
Emotion recognition is an emerging field with applications in healthcare, education, and entertainment. This study integrates Virtual Reality (VR) with multi-sensor fusion to enhance emotion recognition. The research comprises two phases: data collection and analysis/evaluation. Ninety-five participants were exposed to curated audiovisual stimuli designed to elicit a wide range of emotions within an immersive VR environment. VR was chosen for its ability to provide controlled conditions and overcome the limitations of current mobile sensor technologies. Physiological data streams from various sensors were integrated for comprehensive emotional analysis. ElectroEncephaloGraphy (EEG) data revealed brain activity linked to emotional states, while eye tracking data provided insights into gaze direction, pupil dilation, and eye movement—factors correlated with cognitive and emotional processes. Peripheral signals, including heart rate variability, ElectroDermal Activity (EDA), and body temperature, were captured via wearable sensors to enrich the dataset. Machine learning models, such as XGBoost, CatBoost, Multilayer Perceptron, Gradient Boosting, and LightGBM, were employed to predict participants’ emotional states. Evaluation metrics, including accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 scores, demonstrated the robustness and precision of the proposed VR-based multi-sensor fusion approach. This research presents a novel approach to emotion recognition, bridging gaps in traditional methods by integrating VR, multi-sensor fusion, and machine learning. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Oral booster probiotic bifidobacteria in SARS-COV-2 patients
(SAGE Publications Inc., 2021) Bozkurt H.S.; Bilen, Ömer
Oral booster-single strain probiotic bifidobacteria could be a potential strategy for SARS-CoV-2. This study aims to evaluate the role of oral probiotic Bifidobacterium on moderate/severe SARS-CoV-2 inpatients. In this single-center study, we analyzed data of 44 moderate/severe inpatients with diagnosed COVID-19 in Istanbul Maltepe University Medical Faculty Hospital, 2020 from 1 November 2020 to 15 December 2020. Clinical and medication features were compared and analyzed between patients with or without probiotic. In result, 19 of the 44 patients (43.18%) who were administrated with oral booster-single strain probiotic were discharged with the median inpatient day of 7.6 days which were significantly shorter than those of patients without probiotic. There were significant differences in inpatient days, radiological improvement at day 6 and week 3, and reduction in interleukin-6 levels in those receiving oral probiotic therapy. Although the mortality rate was 5% in the probiotic group, it was 25% in the non-probiotic group. Booster-single strain probiotic bifidobacteria could be an effective treatment strategy for moderate/severe SARS-CoV-2 inpatients to reduce the mortality and length of stay in hospital.

Reflections on “place attachment”: perceptions of urban redevelopment in an informal neighborhood in Istanbul
(Springer Science and Business Media B.V., 2024) Inal-Çekiç, Tuba; Kozaman Aygün, Senem; Bilen, Ömer
In the last two decades, urban redevelopment practices in informal settlements in Turkey often neglected inhabitants' spatial practices. The contradictions between conceived and lived space constitutes reactions to these spatial interventions. Against this background, this paper examines the association between place attachment and residents' attitudes toward the redevelopment project in an informally developed neighborhood. Using path and decision tree analysis of survey data, the paper explores the relationship between their attitudes towards and their attachment to the neighborhood. Our findings reveal that individuals' social and physical bonds with their neighborhood shape their attitude toward urban redevelopment. As such, this study confirms the idea that daily interactions between residents reinforce their place attachment in informal settlements where place identity compensates for the (low) quality of life. Still, our findings also demonstrate that residents' identification with the place is a more influential factor, compared to the risk of leaving the neighborhood, on the level of concern against spatial interventions. © The Author(s) 2023.

Spatial Distribution Analysis of Syrian Immigrant Population Problem in Fatih - Istanbul
(Konya Technical Univ, Fac Architecture & Design, 2020) Bilen, Ömer; Gur, Mehmet; Koç, Ersan; KamacI Karahan, Ebru
Purpose The paper reflects the impacts of the "Arab Spring" that broke out in Tunisia and Syria and led to the loss of more than 300,000 people. A wave of migration began in 2011, especially from Syria to its neighbouring countries including Turkey and Lebanon. Syrian migratory flows have caused social, economic, and ecological problems in the hosting countries. Turkey is one of the countries most affected by the wave of migration from Syria. Syrian refugees were unequally distributed or dispersed not only in leading metropolitan areas of western Turkey but also in many neighbouring cities in the southeast. The distribution of Syrian refugees in Turkish cities revealed considerable spatial heterogeneity and differences. Design/Methodology/Approach The sample size of the study is 953 and the margin of error of this sample size is +/- 3.17 at a 95% confidence level. Stratified simple random sampling was used. Interviews were Findings Fatih in Istanbul is one of the districts where Syrian immigrants most often settle. As part of the research on social risk mapping for Fatih District, immigrants - especially Syrian immigrants - have been identified as the main cause of problems by residents (the locals), with this group experiencing higher layoffs in terms of economic opportunities. Our analysis found that the main reason why Syrian immigrants are cited as a problem is "economic motivation". The rate at which Syrians are declared a problem in the districts of Fatih district is directly proportional to the distribution of the Syrian immigrant population. Research Limitations/Implications Time restriction, unfavourable weather conditions, missing information for socio economic status calculation, reluctance of women to join the survey. Originality/Value This study is the first research which examined spatially, how forced migration has an impact on local residents. Its results that can be useful for social measures towards urban planning and management to reduce the negative effects caused from forced migration population.

Strategic analysis of the Turkish over-the-counter drugs and non-pharmaceutical products market [Türkiye tezgah üstü ilaç ve ilaç dışı ürün pazarının stratejik analizi]
(Turkish Pharmacists Association, 2021) Memişoğlu, Merve; Bilen, Ömer
Objectives: The over-the-counter (OTC) drug (i.e., non-prescription drugs) market is growing significantly on a global scale. Our study reviews strategies for OTCs, together with other non-pharmaceutical products, such as herbal products, dietary supplements, and other healthcare products. The aim of this study is to analyze the expanded OTC industry to offer possible strategic solutions for existing problems. Materials and Methods: We utilized integrated SWOT and Fuzzy Analytic Network Process analyses, together with quantitative analysis covering industry professionals’ perspectives. Results: Our findings showed that the most suitable market strategies are WO2 (i.e., to use information and digital technologies, including mobile applications and social media, to reduce marketing costs), SO2 (i.e., to promote self-medication/self-care to grow the OTC market and invest in information and communication technologies for this purpose), and ST2 (i.e., to improve health literacy and increase access to accurate and understandable information via alternative channels, such as the internet and social media). These key strategies are closely related to the utilization of digital technologies. Other strategies, such as SO1 (i.e., to encourage pharmacists to provide consulting for OTC products, which carry high profitability) and ST1 (i.e., to undertake stakeholder training programs to ensure production quality and introduce safe use to improve community health), were examined in detail, and their outcomes were interpreted in this study. Conclusion: Given the impact of digital transformation, the same strategies can be implemented for other emerging OTC markets. This study underlines the importance of the OTC sector as one of the main drivers for improving community health and reducing health costs

The Effect of Housing Problems Experienced by Bursa Technical University City and Regional Planning Students during the Pandemic Period on the Planning Studio Course Process
(Abdulkadir KESKİN, 2022) Gezer, Sedanur; Küçük, Gökçe; Bilen, Ömer
The Covid-19 outbreak has deeply affected many systems, especially the health sector. With the interruption of the face-to-face education model in the education system due to the pandemic, students faced many problems, especially the problem of housing. It has come to the fore that the dormitories are turned into quarantine dorms, the obligation to pay rent in the houses they live in, and the lack of sufficient space and necessary tools/equipment for online education in order to continue education activities in these houses. It is one of the most common housing problems. In this direction, in the research, “How did the housing problems experienced by the students of the Department of City and Regional Planning during the Covid-19 pandemic affected the educational process of the Planning Studio course?” intended to answer the question. In order to analyze the research question, in-depth interview method, one of the qualitative research methods, was preferred. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the sample group reached by snowball sampling method from the students studying at Bursa Technical University, Department of City and Regional Planning. The texts obtained from the interviews were analyzed in depth using qualitative research software and interpreted by establishing conceptual relationships between the codes determined by the researchers. In this context, it is determined that sufficient access is not provided for each student in the accommodation areas to the necessary equipment and technological devices for drawing, model and reporting, which are the necessary end products of course outcomes. As a result, in the distance education process, although effective communication between the instructors and students is ensured by using online platforms within the scope of the course, meetings are held at certain times, but there are restrictions. The problems that arise with the effect of the housing problem cannot be fully reflected in the learning outcomes of the course process.

The Interaction Between the Publishing Strategy of Dabiq Magazine and the Terrorist Actions of ISIS in the Western World
(2024) Çetinkaya, Şeref; Darıcılı, Alı Burak; Bilen, Ömer
In recent years, the terrorist organization ISIS has come to the fore with its international terrorist attacks. However, the fact that the ISIS terrorist organization remains on the agenda as much as it is on the agenda, and that it gains new sympathizers and even new terrorist fighters is also related to its propaganda power. Because of the organization focused on propaganda activities in the visual-written media and tried to use this area professionally. One of the means used for the transmission of propaganda activities in the media is the magazines they publish in different languages. Addressing both a regional and a global audience with magazines published in Turkish, Arabic, Persian and English is also an indication of the ISIS terrorist organization's strategy to be effective in many parts of the world. In this study, the words that are frequently repeated in Dabiq Magazine, which is published in English by the terrorist organization ISIS for the purpose of propaganda against the Western world, are examined. Among these words, \"violent-aggressive-negative\" words and \"motivational-positive\" words were identified for their followers, and an attempt was made to analyze ISIS' action and propaganda strategy based on these words. In addition, the study examined the timing of terrorist attacks perpetrated by ISIS in the West and the periods when the violence-glorifying words used in Dabiq magazine increased, and determined whether there was a correlation between them.
